Within the boundaries of Effigy Mounds National Monument, there are over 200 prehistoric burial mounds and 31 of these are also effigies, raised dirt mounds created in the shapes of various native animals. At the visitor center, exhibits and a short film provide an introduction to the park, including a history of the effigies and the groups that built them. As a sacred Native American site, there are few roads in the park, with most access being limited to walking paths and more strenuous hiking trails. Explore the culture that occupied this area from 1000 BCE until 1200 CE, and the animal-shaped effigies were constructed during just the last 800 years of this prehistoric period. The site is located on the western bank of the Mississippi River, a few miles north of Pikes Peak State Park and a bridge that crosses the water into Wisconsin.
